Tesla Model 3 (New) vs Model S (Used) Are Autopilot 2.0, Self Driving, and Ludicrous Mode Worth It?

I’ve received a lot of requests asking to compare a new Tesla Model 3 versus a Used (CPO) Model S so this week we’re going to take a look at the key areas you asked to see compared and my perspective on which factors you should consider when purchasing. If you’re after the latest and greatest features like full Self Driving capabilities, Autopilot 2.0, Ludicrous Mode then the Model 3 is likely your best option. If you are set on an Electric Vehicle (EV) and are considering taking long road trips then I would recommend a used Model S. Another big factor is storage space. The Model S is a full-size sedan giving you loads of storage in the hatch back as well as the front trunk (frunk). The Model 3 will also have a decent amount of storage space but the small trunk opening in the back is going to prevent you from putting larger items inside.

For this analysis I scraped the Tesla.com preowned site and parsed the data to see what the prices, models, and range you might expect to find when looking for a Used Tesla. This data only represents a sample so your results will most certainly be different when searching the pre-owned site. I’ve posted a link below to the pre-owned site as well for your convenience.

The Tesla Model 3 is an all-electric four-door compact luxury sedan produced by Tesla Motors. It was unveiled on March 31, 2016, with initial production and deliveries planned for the end of 2017. Tesla anticipates the Model 3 will deliver an all-electric range of at least 215 miles (346 km), with base model pricing in the US market starting at US,000 before any applicable government incentives.

Within a week of the unveiling, company officials said they had taken 325,000 Model 3 reservations, more than triple the number of Model S sedans Tesla had sold by the end of 2015. These reservations represent potential sales of over US billion. As of May 15, 2016, Tesla had taken about 373,000 reservations.

Company officials said the base model of the all-electric car will have a range of at least 215 miles (346 km), will be able to seat five people comfortably, include both front and rear trunks, and will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour (0 to 100 km/h) in less than six seconds. The Model 3 is expected to have a drag coefficient of Cd=0.21. This will be lower than the Tesla Model S drag coefficient of Cd=0.24, which in 2014 was the lowest among current production cars. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the rear-wheel-drive base model would have great traction on ice because of the fast torque response of the electric motor.

During the unveiling ceremony, Tesla announced a price starting at US,000 before any applicable government incentives. However, with options, Musk predicted that the average sales price will be closer to US,000.[1] First deliveries are expected in the US by late 2017, with full production in 2018. As a result of the high demand for Model 3, in May 2016 Tesla Motors announced its decision to advance its 500,000 total unit build plan (combined for Model S, Model X, and Model 3) to 2018, two years earlier than previously planned, in order to accelerate its target for Model 3 output. Tesla issued US billion in new shares to the stock market to finance the plan.

// Model 3 History
The Model 3 (stylized as “☰”) was codenamed Tesla BlueStar in the original business plan in 2007. The name Model 3 was announced on Musk’s Twitter account on July 16, 2014, however the intended name was Model E that was abandoned due to Ford’s trademark on the name; Musk wanted the three current models to spell SEX, but settled with “S3X”.

// Model 3 Design
In 2013, design chief Franz von Holzhausen stated that the Model 3 will “be an Audi A4, BMW 3-series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class type of vehicle that will offer everything: range, affordability, and performance with a starting price of US,000” that is targeted toward the mass-market. While technology from Tesla’s Model S will be incorporated into the Model 3, it will be 20% smaller than the Model S and have its own unique design. According to Tesla’s CTO, JB Straubel, in October 2015 most Tesla engineers were working on the 3 rather than S or X. Since electric cars have lower cooling needs than combustion cars, the Model 3 does not have a front grille. Musk intended for the final design to be released on June 30, but the design was finished July 27 then it was not publicly released.

In this video, I look at how this new base model Lucid Air stacks up against a Tesla Model S 60. Of course, since recording this Tesla has announced they no longer will be offering the 60 but the comparison is still relevant considering the primary variable is the range of the Model S.

The Latest Details on Pricing and Trim for the Lucid Air

On December 14, 2016, Lucid revealed the Lucid Air to the world during a private VIP event in Fremont, California. This marked our first opportunity to present the Air’s design to the world and to begin demonstrating the capabilities of this groundbreaking new vehicle. The launch event was a resounding success, and we are thankful for all our partners who helped us prepare, for the many enthusiastic people who attended, and for the many positive media stories that resulted.

With the event now completed, we realize that there are aspects of the company and the Lucid Air that could use further clarification. We also realize that additional questions will arise periodically, requiring our timely response. To address these questions, we are creating a new blog series we call Clear the Air, the first edition of which I am using to elaborate further upon the pricing and features of the Lucid Air.

The Base Lucid Air

The car that we have been showing publicly represents a well-optioned Lucid Air, leading to confusion regarding the price range. Much of the speculation suggests that the starting price of the car will be over 0,000, which is not accurate. The Lucid Air will have a base price of ,500, after the federal tax credit available to buyers of battery electric vehicles is subtracted. The base model car will be well appointed and enjoyable to drive. It will provide superior comfort, a better user interface, and better performance than comparably priced BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes.

Features of the base Lucid Air include:

All hardware necessary for autonomous driving
Huge interior space in an efficient package
Two trunks, one in the front and one in the rear, with a combined storage capacity of over 32 cubic feet (similar to the volume of a 4-person hot tub)

5-seat configuration with a rear bench seat
